Ageing with Strength

At PhysioGym, we’re constantly seeking global best practices to bring the most impactful and inspiring elderly wellness solutions to Malaysia. Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to meet and learn from LKK Wellness 練健康, one of the most respected elderly training teams in the Chinese-speaking world.

Who is LKK Wellness?

Founded in Taiwan, LKK Wellness 練健康-凱羅斯健康有限公司 began as a regular gym. But over the years, they evolved into a full-fledged movement dedicated to training middle-aged, older adults, and special populations. Today, they are leaders in the field of elderly fitness, not just in practice but in education, research, and public engagement.

From the Gym to the Nation

What sets LKK Wellness apart is how far they’ve gone beyond the gym floor:

  • 🧠 Collaborating with Taiwan’s government to contribute real-world data for elderly exercise research

  • 📚 Educating the public through workshops, social media, and engaging video content

  • 🎅 Founding the annual "Santa Claus Deadlift Competition" (聖誕老人硬舉大賽) — now in its 4th year — where seniors come together to lift, celebrate, and inspire

Their work is a powerful reminder: age should never be a barrier to progress, pride, or strength.

What really struck me during our conversation was the difference in mindset between the elderly in Taiwan and Malaysia.

In Malaysia, many elders in their 60s still think:

“As long as I can eat, walk, and live… I’m fine.”

But in Taiwan, we hear a different tone:

“Even if I can’t walk well now, I still want to become stronger.”

This simple shift—from passive acceptance to active aspiration—is deeply powerful. It speaks to how dignity in ageing isn't just about survival, but about strength, self-respect, and agency.

No Right or Wrong — But a Future to Aspire To

There’s no “correct” way to age. Every person’s story, needs, and mindset are different. But here at PhysioGym, we see the possibility for a mindset shift in Malaysia. We want to help our elderly go beyond just “being okay.”

We want to see them train for life, not just cope with it.

We want to see more elders who say, “I want to be stronger,” and have the environment, tools, and community to make that a reality.

LKK’s Head Coach and Physiotherapist 宇劭 Bob shared something that hit close to home: “Only doing physiotherapy is safe, but it’s boring. How many of them stop coming after just 1 or 2 sessions? But when you give them a big goal — something meaningful — they stay. And not only do they stay, they improve.”

Moving Forward Together

Our meeting with LKK Wellness was not just a learning session — it was a reminder of what’s possible when you combine clinical excellence, creativity, and heart.

To our seniors, caregivers, and partners: this is just the beginning. Let’s reshape how aging is perceived and experienced — with strength, purpose, and joy.
