Turning Ageing into Strength: LKK Wellness × PhysioGym Malaysia — First International Edition a Success!

ree

From 28 to 30 November, it marks a meaningful milestone in elderly wellness education with the successful completion of the LKK Wellness × PhysioGym Malaysia – Elderly Fitness Personal Trainer Level 1 programme. This event represents the first international edition of the well-established training framework by LKK Wellness, brought to Malaysia in collaboration with PhysioGym by Remeds.

Over the three-day programme, 15 participants — including physiotherapists, personal trainers, and members of the public with a strong interest in elderly training — came together with a shared purpose: to better understand how ageing bodies move, adapt, and grow stronger with the right approach.

A Timely Conversation for Malaysia

Malaysia is facing a growing health paradox. While the nation records one of the highest obesity and diabetes rates in the region, we are also moving steadily into an ageing society. Yet, when it comes to elderly wellness, many older Malaysians remain stuck in an outdated mindset — believing that a simple morning walk is sufficient to stay healthy.

Walking is beneficial, but it is not enough.

As we age, muscle loss, reduced strength, and declining balance become the real threats to independence. Without proper resistance and strength training, daily tasks such as standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, or preventing falls become increasingly difficult — regardless of how many steps are taken each day.

This programme challenges that long-held belief, reframing wellness for older adults as something that must go beyond light activity, and towards structured, safe, and progressive strength-based training that truly supports ageing with dignity and confidence.

Why Resistance Training Is Essential

One of the core pillars of the LKK Wellness curriculum is the understanding that resistance training is not dangerous for older adults — inactivity is. When properly assessed and guided, strength training plays a vital role in:

  • Preserving muscle mass and functional strength

  • Improving balance and reducing fall risk

  • Supporting daily movements such as standing, walking, and stair climbing

  • Enhancing metabolic health, including blood glucose control

The training emphasised the urgent need to develop trainers who truly understand the elderly body, rather than applying generic fitness templates to an ageing population.

Beyond Exercise: Correcting Nutrition Myths

ree

In addition to physical training principles, the programme incorporated dietitian-led education, addressing one of the most misunderstood aspects of wellness. Participants explored how nutrition impacts ageing, muscle health, and chronic disease management — while learning to distinguish evidence-based guidance from internet myths.

This holistic approach reinforces the belief that elderly wellness is not built on exercise alone, but on the integration of movement, nutrition, and informed decision-making.

Building Capacity for an Ageing Future

The successful completion of this first international edition reflects a growing awareness in Malaysia: as our population ages, we need more professionals who are equipped, educated, and confident to work with older adults.

The LKK Wellness × PhysioGym Malaysia Elderly Fitness Personal Trainer Level 1 programme is not just a course — it is a step toward reshaping how we support ageing in Malaysia, with strength, dignity, and understanding at its core.

If you have elderly parents or grandparents at home — someone who says their knees are weak, who avoids stairs, who feels unsteady, or who believes a daily morning walk is “good enough” — this is your sign to look deeper. Strength, balance, and confidence can be rebuilt at any age, but they require intention, proper assessment, and safe resistance training designed specifically for older adults.

We welcome you to reach out, ask questions, or come in for a conversation. Sometimes, the first step toward healthier ageing is simply starting the right discussion.
